Summary:
Canada as you've never seen it: a riveting account of our history through the eyes of the people who lived it. Disc 1 depicts the 1870s and 1880s when the first Prime Minister, John A. Macdonald faces economic depression in the factories in the east and a new revolt in the west led by his old nemesis, Louis Riel. Includes discussion on debates over provincial powers, the Manitoba Schools Question rage and the Canadian Pacific Railway opening the country to floods of immigrants. Disc 2 covers 1896 to 1915 when an economic boom, due to the growth of prairie agriculture, urban industry, and massive waves of immigration brings about ethnic intolerance, campaigns for temperance and women's suffrage. Also, growing tensions over Canada's role in the British Empire help put an end to Wilfrid Laurier's government in 1911. When WWI breaks out, a burst of enthusiasm in English Canada and resistance in French Canada forshadows domestic conflict as wartime pressures grow.
