Summary:
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Eudora Welty was a short story writer and novelist who wrote about the American South. Her novel The Optimist's Daughter won the Pulitzer Prize in 1973. She wrote hugely popular novels, novellas, essays, and a memoir, One Writer's Beginnings, that became a national bestseller. While Welty worked as a publicity agent for the Works Progress Administration, she took photographs of people from all economic and social classes in her spare time. Dating from the early 1930s, these photographs show Mississippi's rural poor and the effects of the Great Depression. Collections of her photographs were published as One Time, One Place (1971) and Photographs (1989). By the end of her life, Welty had been given nearly every literary award there was. In this definitive and authoritative account, Suzanne Marrs restores Welty's story to human proportions, tracing her life from her roots in Mississippi, to her rise to international stature.
