Summary:
From motion picture and television actress Taraji P. Henson comes an inspiring book about family, friends, the hustle required to make it from DC to Hollywood, and the joy of living in your own truth. With a sensibility that recalls her beloved screen characters, including Yvette, Queenie, Shug, and the iconic Cookie from Empire, yet is all Taraji, the screen actress writes of her families, the one she was born into and the one she created. She shares stories of her father, a Vietnam vet who was bowed but never broken by life's challenges, and of her mother, who survived violence both in the home and on Washington DC's volatile streets. She opens up about her experiences as a single mother, a journey some saw as a burden but which she saw as a gift. Taraji reflects on the world-class drama education she received at Howard University and the pitfalls that come with being a black actress in Hollywood. With laugh-out-loud humor and candor, she shares the challenges and disappointments of the actor's journey and shows us that, behind the red carpet moments, she is ever authentic. Henson's breakthrough movie role was in the 2001 comedy drama Baby Boy in which she portrayed Yvette. In 2005, she starred in Hustle & Flow and played Queenie in David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008). In 2010, she appeared in the comedy Date Night and co-starred in the remake of The Karate Kid. On television, she was a regular cast member on series such as The Division, Boston Legal and Eli Stone. From 2011 to 2013, she co-starred as Detective Jocelyn Carter in the CBS drama Person of Interest. As of 2015, she stars as Cookie Lyon on the Fox drama series Empire. Henson made her singing debut in Hustle & Flow; she provided the vocals for the Three 6 Mafia track "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp". The song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2006. She has made several appearances in music videos, starring in the rapper Common's music video "Testify" in 2005 and appearing in Tyrese Gibson's music video Stay.
