Summary:  Frederick Varley was born in Sheffield, England. He moved to Canada in 1912 and was a founding member of the Group of Seven artists. In 1918 he accompanied Canadian soldiers in France as an official war artist. He became famous for his portraits and his paintings of landscapes ravaged by harsh climate or forest fires.
