Summary:  Ernest Lawson was born in 1873 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He moved to the United States in 1888. He was primarily a landscape painter, but also painted urban scenes. Though considered an American Impressionist, Lawson falls stylistically between Impressionism and realism. He became a member of The Eight, a group of American artists. His search for the picturesque took him to Spain, New Hampshire, Nova Scotia, Kansas, Colorado, Tennessee, New Mexico, Connecticut, and Florida. He died in 1939 in Florida.
