Summary:
"In 1994, twelve babies died while undergoing cardiac surgery in Manitoba's largest hospital. At the time, Carol Youngson was the nurse in charge of the Health Sciences Centre's cardiac operating room, caring for some of the hospitals's most vulnerable patients. 'Take Your Baby and Run' is her moving first-hand account of the unfolding tragedy. Youngston describes the multiple medical mistakes that led to the deaths and how horrified nurses struggled to sound the alarm in a system that dismissed them as over-emotional and unprofessional. When the pediatric cardiac surgery program ended, a five-year inquiry into the causes of the twelve deaths revealed what the nurses already knew: surgical errors and shocking systemic issues, including a dysfunctional hospital hierarchy that ignored repeated warnings that all was not well within its prestigious program."--Back cover.
Carol Youngson is a retired registered nurse who has spent over two decades working in operating rooms and served as investigator for the Manitoba Department of Justice for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Carol lives in Winnipeg. 'Take Your Baby and Run' is her first book.
