Summary:
Bunny Mellon, the style icon and American aristocrat who lived in the high-level arenas of politics, diplomacy, art and fashion. She died in 2014 at age 103 and was press-shy during her lifetime. Rachel Lowe Lambert Lloyd Mellon (1910 - 2014), often known as Bunny Mellon, was an American horticulturalist, gardener, philanthropist, and art collector. She designed and planted a number of significant gardens, including the White House Rose Garden, and assembled one of the largest collections of rare horticultural books. She was the eldest child of Gerard Barnes Lambert, president of the Gillette Safety Razor Company and a founder of the pharmaceutical company Warner-Lambert, the makers of Listerine. She became the second wife of Paul Mellon, co-heir to one of America's greatest business fortunes, derived from the Mellon Bank created by his grandfather and father. Together the couple collected and donated more than a thousand works of art, mostly eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European paintings, to the National Gallery of Art.
