    Summary:
"Texas Ranger Andy Pickard, still unsure of himself and his decision to become a Ranger, is newly married and eager to spend time with his wife. Duty intervenes, however, and he is ordered to apprehend a murdering horse trader and bring him to trial. The man on the run is Donley Bannister, who killed a lowlife named Cletus Slocum when Slocum had the temerity to steal one of Bannister's horses. At Bannister's West Texas hideout, Pickard is shot by one of the trader's cohorts. In an ironic twist, Bannister saves the Ranger's life by fending off the would-be-killers. He takes Andy to a cow camp for treatment, then flees. Once Andy is healed enough to be able to ride, he shadows Geneva Bannister, Donley's young wife, hoping she will lead him to the wanted man. But the trail takes unexpected turns and detours: Near Fort Concho, Andy's mission is interrupted by an ugly racial incident in which a black soldier is killed: Bannister is shot by outlaw Curly Tadlock and left for dead; and Tadlock takes Geniva hostage and brutally assaults her. Even after Andy apprehends Bannister in the town of Junction, danger lurks in a church belfry; one of Cletus Slocum's brothers is detemined that Donley Bannister will never stand trial. As Ranger Pickard learns, nothing stirs emotions in Texas as much as men stealing other men's horses."--Publisher.
