The first three, translated by David Hawkes, are the original 80 chapter work which circulated in various partial manuscripts, possibly before as well as after Cao Xueqin's death in 1764. The last two, translated by John Minford, are the 40 chapter conclusion published in 1791, supposedly edited by Gao E from Cao's notes. Hawkes, in his introduction to volume one, suggests they were edited by a family member before being used by Gao E. Minford, in his introduction to volume four, suggests they were based on an earlier version of the full work.] Translated from the Chinese. Summary:  Volume two picks up at chapter 27, right where the previous volume left off. The lush adventures of the Jia family continue to unfold, and though The Crab-Flower Club lacks a lot of the magical components of the first volume, it makes up for it with detailed descriptions of the food, wardrobe, traditions, and beliefs of wealthy Chinese during the Qing Dynasty. The excitement continues; there are two suicides, adultery, three near-death beatings, and all while stealthy moves are made by Jia Zheng's lead concubine to position her son as the favored child.
