Charlie Hernández has received a letter from the Land of the Dead -- a dire warning from his grandmother concerning his (and the rest of La Liga's) impending demise. He doesn't have much to go on, but according to the letter, a mysterious incident known only a the "Five Donkeys" set in motion an unstoppable chain of events that will culminate in the total destruction of the Land of the Living. Left with little alternative, Charlie, Violet, and Raúl enlist Esperanza's help to use forbidden calaca magic to travel back to when the trouble began: 1950s Cuba. But what they find in the mountain rainforests of Havana is a trail of dark secrets. No matter how many of those secrets Charlie and his friends uncover, their efforts will all be for nothing if they can't decipher what La Mano Peluda is planning before he puts it into action. And a new revelation adds an unexpected complication to their quest: there is another tim etraveler in town. Whatever the difficulty or the price, Charlie's only hope for victoy is to untangle past, present, and future before the world he loves vanishes into history.
