    Summary:
"For Judge John Deed, following the letter of the law can be tricky when the courtroom is clouded with conspiracy, heartbreak and scandal. A passion for doing right often leaves Deed at odds with his colleagues, family and lovers. Is all fair in the pursuit of justice? Controversial cases, pressure from high places, family problems and a broken heart, the eponymous judge has them all in the fifth season. In the courtroom, Deed presides over a murder that threatens to unmask the corruption of the prison service while the case of an animal rights activist accused of murdering a scientist brings him into direct conflict with his equally strong-willed daughter. Away from the walls of justice, Deed's relationship with Jo Mills deteriorates when her former lover returns out of the blue. What will it take for justice to be served - in and out of the courtroom? Hard Gating: A young black man is stabbed to death in a shared cell - by a known racist - a week before he is due for release. Despite the Prison's excuse of overcrowding, Deed's questioning reveals a more sinister cause. My Daughter, Right or Wrong: When an animal rights organization fire-bombs the science faculty at Sussex University, one of the organizers finds himself on trial for the murder of a scientist who was killed. Despite opposition from her father, Charlie Deed runs the case on her own, but finds it impossible to separate her personal beliefs from her professional role. Lost Youth: Parents fight to save their two-year-old boy after Marc Thompson tells them that it would be in the baby's best interests if they did not resuscitate him again. Meanwhile, Jo Mills is in front of Deed defending a teenager, Macdonald Brock, accused of stealing a mobile phone. Silent Killer: Gilly Bridges, convinced a mobile phone mast erected above her apartment has caused her family severe illness, sues the local council. Rose Hussein, the wife of a former minister in the Iraqi government, approaches Deed claiming that her husband, three children and seven grandchildren were poisoned and killed by depleted uranium used by the British Army."--Container.
