Summary:
"The Tenth Frontier (1956): A music-filled tour designed to show the positive changes Newfoundlanders have seen since joining Canada. Travel from St. John's to the outport of Renews, to the pulp-and-paper operations of the interior. (30 min., black and white) Encounter at Trinity (1957) A Trinity Bay shore fills with thrashing pothead whales, as fishermen launch harpoons from dories. It's the late-summer whale roundup, where potheads are herded into shallow waters, as part of what a fisheries official calls "fur fishing." Join mainlander Fred Davis as he learns all about the connections between the whales, Newfoundland fishermen and well-heeled fur buyers in central Canada. Preview. Whale-hunting scenes may be disturbing to some viewers. (30 min., black and white) The Tenth Frontier is a 12-part series highlighting 50 years of NFB films from and about Newfoundland and Labrador. From touching personal stories, to portraits of public figures, to windows on ways of life now past, The Tenth Frontier is a treasure of historical films and fresh perspectives."--NFB.
