From an innocent childhood, spent free of stricture and largely in the company of animals, Mowat was catapulted into wartime service, where the carnage of the Italian campaign shattered his faith in humanity forever. On his return, he accepted a stint on a scientific collecting expedition to the Barrengrounds, where in the bleak but beautiful landscape he found his purpose - first with the wolves and then with the Ihalmiut. Out of these experiences came his first battles with federal bureaucracy, and his first books. Some descriptions of sex, some strong language. 2008.
