Summary:
"The story of Tessie Gillis is now well known. She was a woman determined to write, who found the time to write only after she was stricken with heart disease, confined to one room and an oxygen tent, living in rural Cape Breton Island. From there she contacted Evelyn Garbary who became her editor, her friend and, after Tessie's death, her devoted promoter -- keeping Tessie's work alive, getting stories read on CBC Radio and eventually seeing the work published. Tessie saw none of this. She died in 1972. Since then her stories and two novels have become established classics -- the first Cape Breton writing to dare tell stark stories of harscrabble life, of rural distances and pain, and of alcoholism and domestic abuse -- stories that have realized high acclaim. And now, in honour of the 100th anniversary of the birth of this Godmother of Cape Breton fiction, Breton Books is proud to offer a new collection of the writing of Tessie Gillis."--Publisher.
