Summary:
"Winston Churchill wrote about the illuminating effect of anecdotes in writing history and scoffed at those who did not accept stories associated with history. He said of King Alfred's encounter with the burned cakes, 'It's a fine story. If it's not true it should have been!' Dr. Johnson, in his dictionary, defined the anecdote as 'biographical incident' providing an insight into a private life. Therefore, scattered throughout the sketches of hte politicians who grace these pages are some stories designed to shed light on them. The first duty of a writer is to be read. I trust that the small stories/anecdotes assist in fulfillig this duty and that this will be 'a good read' to those interested in the topic. Myself, I have always found the play of politics exciting, even with the present day disappointments and frustrations. In several of our professions we have established Halls of Fame to honor the contributions of individuals. Not so, with politicians. Therefore, I offer this book as a substitute, if not of reverence, at least to commemorate the contributions of those who have been associated with North Sydney and who were elected to provincial or federal parliaments."--Back cover.
