Nous sommes en 1919. Un bateau quitte l'Empire du Levant avec à son bord plusieurs dizaines de jeunes femmes promises à des Japonais travaillant aux États-Unis, toutes mariées par procuration. C'est après une éprouvante traversée de l'Océan pacifique qu elles rencontrent pour la première fois à San Francisco leurs futurs maris. Celui pour lequel elles ont tout abandonné. Celui auquel elles ont tant rêvé. Celui qui va tant les décevoir. À la façon d'un choeur antique, leurs voix se lèvent et racontent leurs misérables vies d'exilées... leurs nuits de noces, souvent brutales, leurs rudes journées de travail dans les champs, leurs combats pour apprivoiser une langue inconnue, la naissance de leurs enfants, l'humiliation des Blancs... Une véritable clameur jusqu'au silence de la guerre et la détention dans les camps d'internement - l'État considère tout Japonais vivant en Amérique comme traître. Bientôt, l'oubli emporte tout, comme si elles, leurs époux et leurs progénitures n'avaient jamais existé.
