    Created in AD 306 by the the Roman Emperor Constantine, the Byzantine Empire had as its capital the former Greek city of Byzantium, which the Emperor renamed Constantinople (present-day Istanbul). Byzantium was important in its own right but also served as a bridge between East and West and between ancient and modern society. Timothy E. Gregory is Professor of Byzantine History at Ohio State University.
