Summary:
"At nearly 40% of the total population of
Nova
Scotia
, the under 35 year old demographic is a sizeable one. It’s also largely invisible. And it’s in trouble. This is one of the key conclusions drawn from numbers released today in the Community Foundation of
Nova
Scotia
's 2014 Vital Signs report on the province's children &
youth
. The 64 page report, the first to focus exclusively on children &
youth
by the Foundation, provides a comprehensive overview of quality of life trends impacting this demographic. It found that students continue to struggle with the Department of Education's expectations, especially with respect to math where only 54% of our province's Grade 8 students met expectations in 2013. It also noted that older students face different challenges with education, particularly with respect to our university tuitions which are some of the highest in the country. They also struggle with high rates of unemployment. In 2013,
Nova
Scotia
had the highest
youth
15 to 24 years unemployment rate among Canadian provinces at 18.3%. Fortunately these rates decrease with increased levels of education, but the burden of student loans and lower wages shows up in other areas

particularly food security, general health and especially mental health"--From novascotiasvitalsigns.ca website.
