Summary:
The contributions of the 7th Canadian Stationary Hospital in
World
War
I. The
medical
unit Dalhousie University sent to Europe was a stationary hospital, a name that's somewhat misleading as it was actually quite mobile. A stationary hospital could treat approximately 400 patients. If a wounded soldier in the First
World
War
made it past clearing stations at the front lines, he might have found himself at a stationary hospital, which acted as a midpoint between the front lines and hospitals back in Canada. Dalhousie University's stationary hospital moved to different towns in England and
France
, spending over a year in the
northern
French village of Arques, close to the front. Includes a foreword by Lt. Col. Vivian McAlister RCMS, profiles of some of the main characters, and a reproduction of a painting by Sir William Orpen of the hospital at work. Des Leddin is a gastroenterologist and professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University.
