    Summary:
"Outside the town of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, Barbara Ann is thirteen, going into grade seven and starting a new school. She wants what most other teenage girls want: the right hair, the right clothes, the right friends, the right boyfriend, and everything else that leads to love and happiness. Innocence allows her to believe it's all easily within her grasp, with the only obstacle being her over-controlling mother. She fights and pushes against boundaries to gain the freedom she wants. Each step a power struggle between mother and daughter. When Barbara Ann finally meets a boy and believes all her dreams are coming true, her life shatters in ways she never saw coming. In desperation she tries escaping her pain, but instead her anxiety and depression increase and she spirals into a "nervous breakdown." It is in the midst of all of this that Barbara Ann learns the depths of her mother's betrayal and the realization of just how much she's lost, and the need to find inner strength. Readers will be torn between understanding a mother's interference in her daughter's life and her daughter's emotional stress caused by the mother's interference. Readers will enter the world of a teenage girl and experience what life's like from her point of view... experiencing anxiety, loss, grief and depression."--From amazon.ca website.
"Balancing Act is a memoir of a teenage girl's search for love & happiness. A difficult mother/daughter relationship and a young love story, along with her struggles with anxiety, loss, grief, and depression, and the situations that eventually lead to a nervous breakdown. [I was] born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. My interest in drawing began around the age of ten. In my teen years I wanted to pursue art as a career, but circumstances prevented that from happening. Something within me kept pushing me on. Kept me believing that creating art was important. In September 1988, I had my first solo show at The Black Duck Gallery, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. In 1990 I began instructing art classes for children. For twelve years I travelled to numerous school in Lunenburg County, NS, offering after school classes. I also worked for Bridgewater Parks & Recreation instructing children and adults from 1997 to 2002. The desire to write became stronger and in the year 2000, I signed up for creative writing classes, feeling that if I didn't I would go crazy. So, once again, I stepped outside my comfort zone. I follow where my inner voice leads. My art and writing has guided me to let go of the past and move on to live more fully in the present moment. My goal is to aid others on their journey to heal inner wounds and find joy, peace and love. And the value of trusting their inner guidance."-- From the author's website: www.barbaracarterartist.com
