    Summary:
The two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of W. E. B. Du Bois now in one condensed and updated volume. William Edward Burghardt "W. E. B." Du Bois (1868 - 1963) was the premier architect of the civil rights movement in America - was a towering and controversial personality, a fiercely proud individual blessed with the language of the poet and the impatience of the agitator. He was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, and editor. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, he became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. Du Bois was one of the co-founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. Lewis chronicles Du Bois's long and storied career, detailing the momentous contributions to our national character that still echo today. David Levering Lewis is the Julius Silver University Professor and Professor of History at New York University. He is twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography, for part one and part two of this biography of W. E. B. Du Bois (issued in 1994 and 2001, respectively).
    Awards:
Winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Biography: W. E. B. Du Bois: Biography of a Race, 1868–1919 (Part 1 of this book).
Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Biography: W. E. B. Du Bois: The Fight for Equality and the American Century 1919-1963 (Part 2 of this book).
