    Summary:
Intertwining philosophy and historical narrative, Appiah has created a remarkably dramatic work, which demonstrates that honor is the driving force in the struggle against man's inhumanity to man - and the foundation of democratic movements. He investigates the ending of three morally repugnant practices: dueling among British gentlemen, foot-binding among the Chinese elite and slavery in the British Empire, as well as the continuing practice of family honor killing in present-day Pakistan. Kwame Akroma-Ampim Kusi Anthony Appiah (born in 1954) is a British-born Ghanaian-American philosopher, cultural theorist, and novelist.
