Includes bibliographical references.
Summary:
"Sawbones Book covers all hospitals and related institutions, for physical and mental health from the earliest hospital ship in 1749, to include all regular and temporary ( e.g.
Halifax
Explosion, Epidemics and Wartime hospitals) and institutions for handicapped, mentally ill, including prisons, children's hospitals, adult public and private and military hospitals, MDS, nursing. medicines, contagious diseases past present and future. The first doctors of
Nova
Scotia
had little or no training because there was no law regulating the practice of medicine. There was no legal registration required to practice medicine or surgery in this province. Doctors had to leave
Nova
Scotia
and go to the United States or Europe to receive basic medical instruction, while many who wished to enter the medical profession had to follow the village doctor or leading physician in some towns. They learned by watching the doctor and helping out when required. The first Medical Act was passed on May 29, 1828, an Act to exclude uneducated and unskilled people from the practice of doctoring and surgery. The early doctors of
Nova
Scotia
prepared their own medications for their patients and usually operated a dispensary adjoining their office where they hired people to make medicine for them."

"A fascinating non-fiction
history
in photography & prose by nurse/author Devonna Edwards of the evolution of hospitals and related institutions in HRM (oldest & most specialized hospitals in NS). 269 years from the founding of
Halifax
to 2018; parallels the story of disease & medicine and how medical doctors and nurses evolved as professions to cope with the ever-changing threats from ancient and modern diseases, catastrophe and war. Follow the evolution of societal attitudes towards less fortunate souls who were often victims of circumstance, tragedy, discrimination or disability. Contains 230 photographs/sketches of historical structures, many of which no longer exist; plus fascinating anecdotes: poems, ‘grave-robbing’; ‘saved by the bell’; ‘ghost’ stories at the
Halifax
Infirmary, the
Nova
Scotia
Hospital & George’s Island tunnels ... more.. Bonus chapters: temporary hospitals of the
Halifax
Explosion and WWI and WWII hospital ships. A most comprehensive book: accurate, sad, inspiring, shocking, and revealing."
