McNeil
lived adventure. Born in Winnipeg in 1908,
McNeil
played for the 1931 and 1937 Regina Roughriders, precursor to the Saskatchewan CFL team, and joined the RCMP on May 26, 1931. He trained at "Depot" Division in Regina and was posted to a number of detachments in the Northwest Territories, New Brunswick, Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan. One of his early postings was to the Northwest Territories in 1932, where he replaced an RCMP officer killed by the Mad Trapper of Rat River. A pilot himself,
McNeil
often flew with famed Northern pilot Wilfred "Wop" May before becoming one of the RCMP's first members in its "Air" Division. Rising through the RCMP ranks,
McNeil
had no fewer than 34 postings. His career included service in the RCAF during the Second World War (during which he became a Wing Commander), "Air Division" in the RCMP, and Officer in Charge of the RCMP Musical Ride in 1952. In 1959, then-Inspector
McNeil
was given Command of "L" Division, the province of Prince Edward Island. The position was later upgraded to the rank of Superintendent. He was to remain in that position until his retirement on January 9, 1966.
McNeil
died on June 23, 2004"--Provided by publisher.
