Traditional Bedfordshire lace was a cottage industry. In the 17th and 18th centuries, lacemaking skills were often taught to children in workhouses, who then sold the product to lace dealers. Bedfordshire lace is a hand-made lace, often called a bobbin lace or bone lace since the finished patterns of hand-twisted threads were wound on bobbins or bones.
