A novel about women and art. The story of Karitas who as a teenager moves with her family to the town of Akureyri from the countryside, because her mother decides that all her children should go to school. Life is not easy for a widow with six children, but her mother obtains her goal through hard work and a steadfast belief in the children and herself. In Akureyri Karitas encounters an upper class lady who gives her private drawing lessons and pays for her to study in a Copenhagen art school. When she returns after five years of studies she decides to get a job to earn some money that will allow her to work at her art, but this will prove an elusive goal after she meets a man named Sigmar.
