Summary:
"Community, anti-poverty, social justice, and social
policy
research organizations recognize that the gap between the rich and poor is widening, and that in a country as rich and prosperous as Canada the rate of poverty is unacceptably high. In
Nova
Scotia
, research has shown that poverty is not only high but that it is also deep. Reducing the incidence and the depth of poverty is essential to ensure a healthy and sustainable future for our province. To this end, in May 2007, Community Action on Homelessness, the Community Advocates Network, Dalhousie Legal Aid
Services
, and Stepping Stone hosted a provincial two-day strategy session to build consensus on a poverty reduction strategy for
Nova
Scotia
. Representatives from anti-poverty and social justice groups across
Nova
Scotia
, along with people with direct experience of poverty, discussed results from previous consultations and strategy sessions, the realities of living in poverty, and what is happening presently in anti-poverty efforts in
Nova
Scotia
. A common understanding about the causes and impacts of poverty, a vision, guiding principles, and goals and objectives for what needs to change, together with processes and action strategies to accomplish it, were developed. With the common goal of reducing and eliminating poverty in
Nova
Scotia
, this Framework for a Poverty Reduction Strategy in
Nova
Scotia
is the end result of the forum, writing and editing by a follow-up working group, and review and additional input from forum participants."--From executive summary.
