Summary:
"
Pinchas
Gutter
, born to a Jewish family in Lodz, Poland, in 1932, feels World War II looming in the late 1930s. When Germany occupies Poland in September 1939, he and his family flee to Warsaw to try to escape the anti-Jewish laws and mounting persecution. But in October 1940, the Jews of Warsaw are incarcerated in the Warsaw ghetto.
Pinchas
and his family hide during roundups, but after the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in April 1943, they cannot escape the Nazis. They are taken to the Majdanek concentration camp, where
Pinchas
is separated from his family.
Pinchas
miraculously survives Majdanek and is then deported to a series of Nazi camps over the years -- Skarzysko-Kamienna, Czestochowa (as part of the HASAG forced labour camps), Buchenwald, Colditz and, finally, after a death march, Theresienstadt, from where he is liberated in May 1945. An orphan after the war, thirteen-year-old
Pinchas
is taken to Britain with the help of Jewish relief organizations. In Britain, he begins to rebuild his life, but it is not until he ultimately immigrates to Toronto, Canada--after living in Paris, Israel and South Africa--that he finally feels free."--From publisher.
