Summary:
This fascinating history of the gondola, which was first used in medieval Venice as a maneuverable getaway boat, reveals how it evolved over the centuries into a floating pleasure palace that facilitated the romantic escapades of the Venetian elite. Baracaroles are boat songs, especially those sung by Venetian gondoliers and typically characterized by the alternation of a strong and a weak beat in 6/8 time suggesting a rowing rhythm or the motion of a boat in the waves. Various 18th- and 19th-century operas contain vocal barcaroles.
