    When Gui stows away on Captain Rossignol's ship and arrives at the New Land, he feels it's the best thing he's ever done, until he finds himself hunted by a man wearing badly worn gentleman's shoes, and in his attempt to uncover the man's identity, stumbles into a nest of illegal fur trapping. He and his friend Wowkwis, a Mi'kmaq lad, are determined to bring the violators to justice, but in doing so, Gui finds he is the one who faces death.
