Summary:
"
Dartmouth
is a seaport on the South Devon coast of
England
in the County of Devon. It is a famous centre for yachting and has a first-class harbour. The
history
of the area can be traced to Prehistoric times and the town's rich maritime past has been well documented for more than 800 years. In important boroughs such as
Dartmouth
, the Mayor and Corporation were granted authority by Royal Charter to carry on the business of managing the town on behalf of the King. As a symbol of that Royal authority, boroughs were entitled to have one or more ceremonial maces to be carried before the Mayor by the Serjeants-at-Mace.
Dartmouth
possesses four such maces, as described in more detail within the Regalia Booklet. In the late 19th century, it became common for Mayors to wear a chain of office (not all towns being in possession of a mace), to signify that they were acting in their official capacity. The
Dartmouth
chain of office dates from 1895, and is a particularly fine example of its type. This illustrates its importance as a port down through the centuries. It also seeks to put into context the reasons why the town possesses so many fine examples of civic insignia, including: Small Maces (1530-1604) made of silver parcel gilt, chased with figures playing musical instruments and inset with circular medallions bearing Royal armorials. Silver Oar (1721) - The Mayor and Corporation of
Dartmouth
were formerly lessees from the Duchy of Cornwall of the Bailiwick of the water of
Dartmouth
and held as a symbol of their rights a Silver Oar presented to them in 1721 by the then Duke of Cornwall - later George II. The Mayor's Chain - Made in 1895 and at that time, contained 23 3/4 ounces of gold. This sum was raised by public subscription. The Mayoress' Chain - made in 1954."--From dartmouthtowncouncil.org/Dartmouth-TC website.
