Summary:
John and Jane Meagher's farm was located in what is now part of the Lake Lamont - Lake Major watershed area in
Dartmouth
,
Nova
Scotia
. April 11, 1842 was a beautiful warm spring day, and two of their
children
, Jane Elizabeth Meagher, age 6, and her sister, Maggie, age 4, walked together from their home and became lost in the woods. The following evening there was a two-inch snowfall. Eventually, almost three thousand volunteers joined the search for the lost
children
. The bodies of the two girls were found six days after they left home. They had walked about five or six kilometers and had died of exposure within a day or two of becoming lost. Author Bob Lindsay is a retired teacher and former Scout leader who shares the results of his research into this local nineteenth
century
tragedy.
