    Summary:
Stirling is one of Scotland's greatest stone castles - an icon integral to how we understand the nation's story. Stirling Castle was the key to the kingdom of Scotland, dominating a vast volcanic rock above the river Forth at the meeting point between Lowlands and Highlands. The castle peaked in importance in the 1500s, but it had been fortified since ancient times. Infamous deeds took place here, like the murder of the earl of Douglas by James II. It was also a childhood home of some of the most famous people in Scottish and British history, such as Mary Queen of Scots and James VI and I. Generations of Scottish monarchs have enlarged, adapted and embellished Stirling Castle. The palace's lavish design drew on European Renaissance fashions to show off James V's power and good taste. This official guide is comprehensive and fully illustrated, telling the castle's history in an engaging, clear fashion. The lifestyles of Scottish royalty in the 1500s are also explored and images include reconstructions of royal palace rooms in the 16th century.
