    Summary:
"Théodore, the mayor of a village in occupied territory during the Second World War, takes in a 9-year-old orphan, P'tit Claude, while Ms. Lundi, the teacher, gets to know the Gypsies who have come to the village for the harvest. A staunch humanist and republican, she persuades them, with some difficulty, to send their children to school. Among them is Taloche, a towering but childlike 30-year-old Bohemian, with whom P'tit Claude strikes up a friendship. Meanwhile, pressure from Vichy is growing. The Gypsies are first forbidden to travel, then transferred to internment camps. Horrified by their fate, Théodore and Ms. Lundi fight for their freedom."--Container.
