    Summary:
"African-American folklore is rich in stories and songs about people flyng. But racism has consistenly stood in the way of blacks advancing in the field of aviation. In the early days of American flight, aviators such as daredevil Bessie Coleman, the first black American women licensed as a pilot, were forced to go to France to earn their wings. Not until World War II, and an "experiement" at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama to train African-American men for the Army Air Corps, did black pilots begin to break the barrier of racial prejudice in the United States. Similarly, African Americans were deliberately discouraged from becoming astronauts in the American space program. It was not until 1982 that Dr. Guion S. Bluford, Jr. became the first black American launched into space. In this book, Jim Haskins brings to light the exciting and neglected history of the brave African-American men and women who took to the skies."--Back cover
