    Summary:
Chanel No. 5 is the first perfume launched by French couturier Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. The chemical formula for the fragrance was compounded by French-Russian chemist and perfumer Ernest Beaux. He worked from a rose and jasmine base and experimented with modern synthetics, adding notes derived from a jasmine sourcee. The complex formula included the quantities of orris-iris-root and natural musks. The revolutionary key was his use of aldehydes. Presenting a captivating history of the world's most famous, seductive, and popular perfume: This sweeping story of the iconic scent (known as "le monstre" in the fragrance industry) stretches from Coco Chanel's early success to the rise of the seminal fragrance during the 1950s to the confirmation of its bestseller status in today's crowded perfume market.
