Notes:
Lovely and memorable illustrations, created in oil and pencil vignette sketches fill the pages of this book from
Canada
with light and capture the beauty of Lake Huron. A ten-year-old girl spends time with an artist one summer, and he teaches her how to see the world through an artist's eyes and how to paint. When he leaves, he gives her one of his paintings, which her family later realizes was the work of Tom Thomson, a well-known Canadian artist. The author has imagined the events and interactions between the two friends during the summer of 1914. I found the story intriguing, and the artist's exceptional patience and keen desire to share his craft with Helen to be impressive. I can only imagine the impact that experience had on her as well as the inspiration Thomson himself drew from his time in the great outdoors. Sometimes it's necessary to get away from the hustle and bustle of a city or from one's everyday life in order to see things anew or from a different perspective. I was enamored with this author/illustrator's earlier title, Loon, and I also liked this one very much. The story, told in lyrical free verse, has a quiet charm, while the illustrations capture the natural beauty that inspired some of Thomson’s most memorable paintings. An author’s note provides more information about Tom Thomson’s life.
Summary:
In 1914, Tom Thomson spent the summer at a family cottage on Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay, where he taught their ten-year-old daughter, Helen, how to paint. Author Susan Vande Griek and illustrator Pascal Milelli have imagined this time through Helen’s eyes, providing an intriguing glimpse into the famous painter’s life. Helen and her father greet their visitor on the rocks of West Wind Island. She is fascinated by everything about him, his canoe full of gear, his paint-stained hands, his campfire stew. Over the next few days she watches as Tom paddles off to fish and clambers over the rocks to paint. And then he invites Helen to paint with him-- wildflowers blooming near the cottage, boats rocking in the water, pine trees blowing in a storm. And at summer’s end, he leaves her with a memento of their time together.
