    Summary:
Thomas Kinkade generated more money from his art than all other artists in the history of the world combined. The dramatic rise and fall of his billion-dollar art empire. William Thomas Kinkade III (1958 - 2012) was an American painter of popular realistic, pastoral, and idyllic subjects. He studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Among those who mentored and taught Kinkade prior to college were Charles Bell and Glenn Wessels. Kinkade's relationship with Wessels is the subject of a semi-autobiographical film, Christmas Cottage (2008). Thomas Kinkade was remarkably successful in the mass marketing of printed reproductions of his artworks via the Thomas Kinkade Company. He characterized himself as "Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light," a phrase he protected through trademark but one originally attributed to the British master J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851). It has been estimated that 1 in every 20 American homes has a copy of one of Kinkade's paintings. Despite wide commercial success throughout his life, Kinkade is generally held in low esteem by art critics; his pastoral paintings have been described as maudlin and overly sentimental. G. Eric Kuskey worked intimately with Thomas Kinkade and his company for over fourteen years and remained friends with him until his death. Bettina Gilois blogs about art and life for the Huffington Post.
