The story is set in England at the end of the Napoleonic war. The Barristow family uneasily welcomes a husband for their dying daughter. Within an hour of tying the knot Major Devane is a widower. He cannot desert the four ladies he must now protect because of a promise made to a dying man. The secrets of the family are gradually and sometimes unintentionally exposed to him. He finds that, far from wanting to escape, he now desires and intends to stay to see it all through, no matter the consequences to himself. His life has just been turned upside down and before he knows it he is dealing with four interesting and determined women, one of whom wishes to see him gone, or dead! He soon discovers that he has a much more difficult and challenging emotional situation to address than he might have thought possible - and one that he even begins to enjoy in all of its intimate inter-weavings and complexities. The initially damaging perceptions of his most questionable character are gradually and painfully corrected. He becomes aware of the deception of which he has become a part, and patiently observes from a distance that rapidly diminishes to slowly pull him into their intimate circle. The ultimate outcome is ensured by the machinations and manipulations of sisters for and against another sister who seems to remain blind to what must happen.
