    Summary:
"Born toward the end of the first millennium and near-exact contemporaries, Ibn Sina and Biruni lived in an era when Central Asia and the Middle East were the global epicenter of what some have called the 'Musslim Renaissance' and others the 'Lost Enlightenment.' Relentless in their ambition to scale every branch in the tree of knowldedge, including those abandoned in the West, Ibn Sina and Biruni -- respectively, Abū ʻAlī al-Ḥusayn ibn ʻAbdallāh Ibn Sīnā, and Abū al-Raihān Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Bīrūnī, and later known in the West as 'Avicenna' and 'Alberonius' -- dominated their historical moment. They also embodied its genius, making major contributions to everything from astronomy to zoology, and including medicine, mathematics, logic, and metaphysics. The range of their accomplisments stretches from meditations onthe qualities of the soul to the specific gravity of minerals. They were Renaissance men avant la lettre. Yet in the millenium since their death (in 1037 and 1048, respectively) Ibn Sina and Biruni have all but disappeared from view, in part because of the partial nature of their surviving works, in part because Western perspective has dictated the history of ideas. S. Frederick Starr rescues them from oblivion and in the process brings to life the Lost Enlightenment itself. Starr expertly guides us through their lives and works and the interconnections between the two. Starr puts Ibn Sina and Biruni on the same stage, but also highlights their differences, using one to reflect upon the other. They shared much in common, starting with the remarkable coincidence of time and place. The age in which they lived inspired their work and presented challenges to it, forcing them to scramble for patrons and supporters in a world riven by religious and civil strife, wars, and massive dislocations. Where they parted company philosophically and personally is as revealing as that which bonded them, and their rivalry -- sometimes bitter - equally divided and defined them. Whatever their differences, both Biruni and Ibn Sina believed that the ability to reason reflects humanity's essence and committed their lives to its exercise, often at their peril. As Starr show is in this immersive, wise, and humane book, their story transcends the centuries, occuring in a part of the world that today sometimes invites concerns over the role of advanced learning and science there. That these two figures should inform such discussions a millennium after their deaths is appropriate. The geniuses of their age, they also stand as citizens of the global world of ideas and giants of human achievement." --Jacket.
