Summary:
"With the Second World War looming, Montreal seems far from the threat of European Fascisim. Angelo and Sara Alvaro are Italian immigrants working to build their bakery business and support their family. Proud to be Canadian and proud of his Italian heritage, Angela naively thinks Mussolini -- Il Duce -- is a strong leader protecting Italy from the tide of Communism. When Mazzotta suggest that joining the Fascist party will help Angelo make business contacts in the Italian community, Angelo takes the advice despite his wife's misgivings. So begins a chain of events that will tear apart the family and subject the men to RCMP investigation and internment. Based on real events, Il Duce Canadese is the story of a community's struggle. But at its heart it is the story of how a simple Italian-Canadian baker and his family came to be considered a national security threat during a time of political and social uncertainty. Based on real events, Il Duce Canadese is a dramatic mini-series that follows the experiences of the fictional Alvaro family as they struggle to survive these trying times. It is the story of how Angelo, Mario and Momo came to be considered a threat to national security, were arrested by the RCMP and held prisoner in the camp. It follows Sara and Turi, who strain to keep the bakery afloat in a community impoverished by the arrest of its men and the effects of anti-Italian prejudice. It traces the predatory actions of Mazzotta as he takes advantage of the situation to both save his own skin and pursue Sara. Il Duce Canadese shows a family and community trying to come to terms with events over which it had no control, and throws light on a little-known chapter in history, which has new relevance for the world today.
