    Summary:
"The five books of Sonnets by the Sea were written while our poet worked as a night watchman at a seafood plant. I imagine Todd drinking thermoses of sugary Tim Horton’s coffee to alleviate such a dark, cold, and desolate activity. This batch was written in the month of December and readers feel the chill of a Nova Scotia winter in some of the poems as well as anticipation of Christmas, with nods to Jesus, Santa and other so-called angels. There is a lot of love in the poems and I wonder if he equates love with “Life,” which is always capitalised. The Sufi poet Rumi comes to mind when I read Todd’s poetry, conjuring up images of whirling dervishes delivering a spiritual message after a spectacular spin. Perhaps the generous intake of caffeine on the nightshift induced a spontaneous outpouring of words, withal adhering to the strict rhyming scheme of a Shakespearean sonnet. Furthermore, Todd’s skilful wordsmithing is extraordinary when one considers he did not complete schooling past the age of twelve."--From the introduction written by Todd's sister Wilda Goyetche.
