Summary:
"This book tells the extraordinary and forgotten story behind the building of the British and Commonwealth war cemeteries largely due in part to the efforts of one visionary man, a volunteer ambulance commander called Fabian Ware. Horrified by the ignominious treatment of the dead in 1914, he began to record the identity and position of each grave. A Graves Registration Commission was established and as his work became public, and the flood of letters from grieving relatives became a cascade, the Imperial (now Commonwealth) War Graves Commision was formed."--Dust Jacket.
