Bao and Dai are both from noble families. Bao's grandmother is the most respected member in the family and when Dai's mother dies, she is sent to live with Bao's grandmother. Because of her beauty and intelligence, she is easily accepted, especially by Bao. Given their close proximity, they soon fall in love. However, Dai's health is poor and Dai's family chooses another man, Bao-chai, over Bao-yu for her husband. Dai is shocked by this because she loves Bao-yu. On the day of Bao-yu's wedding, Dai dies. Bao-yu dies shortly after as a result of his broken heart.
