is a young Jewish boy in Nazi occupied Belgium whose parents send him to live with non-Jews in the countryside to save him. There he lives in hiding, passing as a Catholic child, attending church and school.
Ben
's parents are murdered in the Holocaust, and after the war,
Ben
's extended family in Ottawa, Canada, send for him. He immigrates to Canada and is adopted by his family. The memoir recounts his coming of age, struggles with adapting to being Jewish again, and his spiritual journey that leads him to letting go of the past and joining the present with a strong sense of justice.

becomes a social worker and social work educator who is also an activist for Black voter rights in the US civil rights movement and for Indigenous rights in Canada over the span of several decades."--Publisher.
