Summary:  Gloria (Hellier) Brown writes about her grandparents, Andrew and Violet Smith of Dildo, a couple whose lives were typical of ouport Newfoundlanders in the early 1900s. In 1919, Andrew returned home from World War I a war hero. He went on to become renowned for harpooning horse mackerel, tending the sick and dying, and having an unbridled zest for life. He and Violet raised a family of ten children and Violet continued to make bread and knit tirgger mitts until she was in her 80s. She lived to her 100th year. Andrew and Violet survined the deaths of two sons and a daughter to Typhoid Fever. Gloria offers up a Newfoundland history lesson that is a tribute to her grandparents and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit.
