    Summary:
"This is the definitive story of The Wimbledon Championship 2006. In the Men's Singles Roger Federer was attempting to join the legendary Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras as the only men to win four consecutive Wimbledon Titles. In the Women's Singles a new name would appear on the Venus Rosewater Dish. Coming into Wimbledon, the 1992 champion American Andre Agassi had announced that this would be his last Championships. During his third round encounter with the French Open Champion Rafael Nadal from Spain, the crowd willed the clock to rewind and cheered every glimpse of the Las Vegan's lingering brilliance but in the end it was the Spaniard's day. But a new showman would emerge in Greek-Cypriot Marcus Baghdatis who over threw Andy Roddick's conqueror, Britain's Andy Murray and the 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt before losing to Nadal in a thrilling semi final. 2006 also proved the year of the two Martinas'. The twenty five year old Hingis returned after five years away from SW19, while forty nine year old Navratilova bid farewell to the scene of her record-equalling twenty Wimbledon titles. World number one and top seed Amelie Mauresmo from France and third seed Justine Henin Hardenne from Belgium contested an exciting Women's Singles Final. Mauresmo won the encounter to become the first French Women's Champion since Suzanne Lenglen in 1925. Federer's quest for an eighth Grand Slam title was a majestic journey. After a second round straight sets victory over an unseeded Tim Henman, the three time champion arrived in the Final without the loss of a set. There he defeated his main rival and number two seed Rafael Nadal, in an enthralling encounter. In winning his fourth consecutive title Federer had answered every question except one. Was he now the greatest player of all-time? Narrated by Sam Hazeldine and written by Andrew Longmore of the Sunday Times, Wimbledon 2006 is a highly entertaining record of this year's proceedings at the world's finest tennis championships."--Container.
