Αυτή η δίψα για αφέντεψη κυριαρχεί από πατέρα σε γιο και από παππού σε εγγόνι... Αυτή η δίψα ούτε καταλαγιάζει ούτε και σβήνει ποτέ. Οι άνθρωποι για χάρη της αφέντεψης υψώνουν το ανάστημα πάνω από τ' ανθρώπινα αλλά και πάνω από το θεό. Τυρρανούν τη σκέψη και την ψυχή τους, κάνουν συμμαχίες περίεργες πότε με το θεό και πότε με το διάβολο. Στήνονται έχθρες και μίση ανάμεσα σε οικογένειες, ακόμα κι ανάμεσα σ' αδέλφια και ανδρόγυνα. Το πάθος της αφέντεψης κυριαρχεί πάνω απ' όλα και όλα μπορούν να θυσιαστούν μπρος σ' αυτό το πάθος που κατατρώει τα ανθρώπινα σωθικά. Μια γενιά από το 1900 μέχρι σήμερα, απλώνει φτερά, ζωή και όνειρα από την Κεφαλονιά στον Πειραιά κι ακόμα παραπέρα, φτάνει στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, την Αλεξάνδρεια, την Αμμόχωστο και τη μακρινή Νέα Υόρκη. Μ' ένα σκοπό, να γίνουν Αφέντες. Αφέντες της ζωής, της δύναμης, του πλούτου, του έρωτα, δε λυγίζουν μπρος σε κανένα εμπόδιο. Μόνο η ζωή, που τραβά το δικό της δρόμο και είναι πάντα τόσο απρόβλεπτη, μπορεί να τους σταματήσει. Μόνο η ζωή μπορεί να φέρει τα πάνω κάτω και να ισοπεδώωσει δούλους κι αφεντάδες. Μόνο η ζωή μπορεί να κάνει έναν αφέντη να νοιώσει γυμνός κι αδύναμος σα ζητιάνος.
