    Summary:
Dr. Masley writes of the two exploding epidemics we are facing today: type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes and escalating rates of disabling memory loss (the annual cost of dementia care in the United States is $215 billion, more than is spent on cancer or heart disease). Research has now proven that these conditions are intimately linked, and here Dr. Masley makes clear that type 2 diabetes and memory loss are largely preventable. Healthy insulin activity and blood sugar control are essential to nerve cell health, especially in the brain. Masley explores the impact of insulin resistance on the brain and the heart/brain/diabetes connection, explaining what happens to the brain as we age normally, how cognitive function and memory work, and discussing the risk factors for memory loss. A step-by-step approach to reversing elevated blood sugar and improving cognitive performance to prevent or delay memory loss. Whatever our age, whatever our blood sugar level, we will feel stronger, healthier, if we follow Dr. Masley's solution for a better, more efficient brain. He gives readers the tools to prevent and reverse this metabolic syndrome and to achieve normal blood sugar levels (below 5.3 mmol/L or 95 mg/dL). Steven Masley, MD, is a physician, nutritionist, trained-chef and a Clinical Associate Professor with the University of South Florida. He is the author of Ten Years Younger, Smart Fat, and The 30-day Heart Tune-Up.
