    Summary:
The fascinating ancient art form of henna body decoration, covering everything from the historical, symbolic and spiritual aspects of henna to its adoption by the West as a way of decorating the body without the permanence of traditional tattoos. The name henna refers to the dye prepared from the henna tree (Lawsonia inermis) and also the art of temporary body art (staining) based on this dye. Mehndi is the variant of henna design used in India and neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Women use mehndi for festive occasions, such as weddings, religious events and traditional ceremonies. Sumita Batra, a leading mehndi artist who has decorated the bodies of Madonna and Gwen Stefani, here creates 40 original designs that can easily be re-created to stunning effect.
